FAQs

How can psychotherapy help me? Psychotherapy can be beneficial for a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, stress, grief, relationship difficulties, trauma, low self-esteem, and managing difficult emotions. It can help you understand the root causes of your challenges, develop healthier patterns, and build greater resilience.

What happens in a typical therapy session? Sessions are typically 50 minutes to an hour long and usually take place weekly. In the initial sessions, your therapist will likely focus on getting to know you, understanding your history, and identifying your goals for therapy. As therapy progresses, you will explore your thoughts and feelings, examine patterns in your life, and work towards making positive changes.

What is the difference between psychotherapy and counselling? Generally, psychotherapy might explore deeper, longer-term issues, while counselling can focus more on specific problems and finding solutions. Both our psychotherapists and counsellors are trained to listen and help you with your wellbeing. The most important thing is finding a practitioner you feel comfortable with. Take a look at their profiles to see who might be a good fit for you.

I'm not sure if my problems are 'big enough' for therapy. There's no threshold for needing therapy. If something is negatively impacting your well-being, relationships, or daily life, it's valid to seek support. Therapy isn't just for crises; it can also be incredibly helpful for personal growth, understanding patterns, and building resilience.

I don't want to just talk about my feelings for an hour. Will it actually help? While talking is a core part of therapy, it's not just aimless conversation. Our therapists are trained to guide you through your thoughts and feelings in a way that leads to insight, understanding, and the development of practical coping strategies. They use various therapeutic approaches to help you identify patterns, challenge negative thinking, and work towards your goals. It's an active process of exploration and change.

How many therapy sessions will I need? The number of sessions varies greatly depending on individual needs, the nature of the issues being addressed, and your personal goals. Some people find benefit from short-term therapy (a few months), while others may engage in longer-term therapy. This will be discussed and reviewed collaboratively with your therapist.

How do I choose a therapist at The Willow Centre? On our "Meet Our Team" page, you can read more about the individual therapists at our centre, their areas of specialisation, and their approaches. You can consider which therapist's profile resonates most with you. If you're unsure, you can contact us, and we can help guide you to a therapist who may be a good fit for your needs. An initial consultation can also provide an opportunity to see if you feel comfortable working with a particular therapist.
